Niebaum-Coppola Vineyard
Believe it or not, this is the first time I had ever been to this winery.
I had intentionally avoided this winery one, because I pictured it to be the
worst of Hollywood commercialism and I had not heard of particular great
reviews of any of their wines.
This winery has a million dollar staircase (per an article in a fairly
recent Wine Spectator) and was supposedly used in some of Coppola's movies
(don't recall myself).
The winery seemed tastefully done. Not too many props (a la Planet Hollywood),
although the tasting area/gift shop was quite large. The wines did were
inoffensive, nothing spectacular, but drinkable now. I bought one bottle
of Bianco, two bottles of the Reserve Cabernet (new offering) and one
bottle of the Reserve Merlot (new offering). All were reasonably priced,
esp. given the price inflation in Napa/Sonoma. Their Rubicon wine was
not being offered for tasting and at $90/bottle I wasn't going to buy
it untasted, esp. when it "only" (still a very good score, but
there are much better bargains to be found) scored an 88 in Wine Spectator.
