May 24: Arrival in Kauai

Andrea and I took a direct flight from San Francisco to Kauai. The direct flight was nice and saved us some time. We took off around 9am PDT and landed in Kauai a little after 11am. Even better, we redeemed Mileage Plus miles so these tickets were free

After arriving in Lihue, we rented a blue Jeep Wrangler (soft top, of course), and checked in at the Marriott. Our room wasn't ready yet (pool view) so we had a couple hours to kill.

We both were nursing colds that we picked up after running the Bay to Breakers and hanging around afterward in the rain.

While waiting for our room, we ate at Duke's and took a couple pictures (above) after eating. You wouldn't be able to even tell that Andrea had chowed on a huge, juicy hamburger because her tummy is so flat. We totally looked like people who had just arrived because of our picture taking and because we weren't already dressed down in our swim suits.

The view of Kalapaki Beach, where the Marriott Resort is located.

We had to increase the melanin content of our skin (which fortunately, we had started to do in Palm Springs) so we spent some time at the pool (very nice pool).

We went for a walk (pictures above) along the boardwalk between Kalapaki Beach and Nawiliwili Harbor where the cruise ships dock. A cruise ship arrived later the next morning. Below, right is a picture of one of the many sea turtles swimming just off the shore. Below, left is a picture of the Marriott resort and Kalapaki Beach.

In the evening, we ran some errands (including stocking up on snacks and drinks) and had dinner at the sushi bar at Kintaro in Kapa'a. The various tuna sashimi and sushi we had were quite fresh and tasty. The softshell crab cut rolls were also quite tasty. Sake was decent (previous weekend we ate at Grasshopper in Rockridge which had the best sake selection we've ever had). Service was good, although the sushi chef seemed a little harried at times (he was the only one working for most of the time we were there and it was a Friday night). Still, the price for everything was very reasonable (compared to what we pay here in San Francisco).
