Doug sporting my Kelty backpack view of rock face I asked Doug to go backpacking with me on this Labor Day weekend because I had never gone backpacking before and I was going on a 6 day trip next weekend in Yosemite! I figured I better try out all of my equipment and become more familiar with backpacking before going on that trip. Most of Doug's hiking equipment was in Kansas City with his family, but I fortunately had a Kelty external frame pack that I bought at a garage sale ($15), he was able to borrow a sleeping bag, and bought a pad. All the rest of the equipment I had and needed to test out.

Doug and I met up at REI in San Dimas and then he drove us to Mt. San Jacinto, near Palm Springs. We had to wait for the ranger station to open to pickup a permit. It's a little confusing because part of the area is a national forest and the other parts is state park and there are stations and permits issued separately for each area. After getting to the right one (the state park), we had to see which campgrounds were available. We had hoped to get one very close to the peak (Little Round Valley Camp), but that one was full so we had to settle for Tamarack Valley Camp.
