Icehouse Canyon to Icehouse Saddle via Chapman trail and back via "low" route
Distance: miles roundtrip
Elevation:
This hike in the Mt. Baldy area with Doug and Maria started at Icehouse Canyon
at 5000' elevation up to Icehouse Saddle at 7580' via the Chapman Trail. I remember
still being sick that day so the hike was a bit rough for me. The trail we took
up was a bit longer (5.5 miles) than the route we would take going down. It was
also on this trail that I first used my Leki trekking poles that I had purchased
on sale at the mega-REI in Seattle. After using them on this hike, I was hooked.
There were quite a few people hiking this trail and when we reached the top there were 10 or more
people there. It was pretty warm at this point.
On the way down, we took the "low route" which was shorter (4 miles) than the way up.
On the way down, we encountered a group that was backpacking. One of the women
was lagging behind and she looked very unhappy.
Doug and I were taking a fast pace back down and went ahead of Maria. I took that a bit
further as I decided to run the rest of the way down as I sometimes do. I was waiting for Doug
and Maria back at the trailhead. It seemed to take them a really long time to get back. When
Doug and Maria finally arrived, Maria was clutching her elbow. She had fallen on the trail.
We thought it was a sprain, but it later turned out that she had in fact broken or chipped
a bone.
